90th Anniversary Celebration

The Junior League of Dayton Celebrates 90 Years

You are invited to help us toast our future and salute our past at the 90th Anniversary Community Impact Luncheon on Thursday, April 29 2010. The event will be held at the Dayton Art Institute (thanks to their generous space donation) in honor of the work the Junior League of Dayton has done with them over the years.

Our September 2009 General Membership Meeting took place at the Dayton Women’s Club, exactly where the first organizational meeting of our 10 charter members occurred in October of 1919. We were the second League in Ohio to join what is now the Association of Junior Leagues International; Cleveland was the first. From that beginning, we have helped open the Dayton Art Institute, performed on stage and as puppeteers for hundreds of schoolchildren, enacted radio and television performances, supplied a planetarium to the Dayton Museum of Natural History (now the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery), operated a mobile speech and hearing screening unit, and advocated for battered women through Silent Witness and Artemis House. To pay for our community efforts, we have held balls, teas, and horse shows; operated a gift shop and a Decorator’s Showhouse; and, for more than half of our existence, brought notable people from all walks of life to Dayton for the Town Hall speaker series. Our focus areas have shifted many times during our history, but have generally always fallen into the following eight categories: Arts, Theatre, & Entertainment; Children; Healthcare; History; Schools & Reading; Science & Nature; Teens; and Women.

The Junior League of Dayton’s involvement in the community spans a diverse group of organizations and we have had a tremendous impact. Of the 140+ projects that we have assisted over the last 90 years, 8-10 of the most successful will be honored at the luncheon. We are excited to pay homage to the work these organizations have done and continue to do in our community!  We hope that you join us at this momentous occasion!
